Maurice Lacroix, a forty-year-old brand, is showing no sign of calming down with the passing of time – just the opposite. The company has developed 14 calibres in-house since it was founded in 1975. All produced at their factory in Saignelégier, a municipality in Franches-Montagnes, in the heart of the Swiss Jura mountains. Each time a new product is presented, the company shows that it is going its own way. Maurice Lacroix has skilfully combined Swiss-made movements and contemporary – one might even say avant-garde – design for certain pieces from the Pontos collection, such as the S Extreme version, or totally vintage design with the S Diver versions. The company has now taken it one step further with the replica Pontos Date Full Black model. Here, time disappears. No, in fact it doesn’t disappear completely – it becomes incidental, but is still being measured, as it must be – it moves into the background while still being centre-stage – it is there without being there… You don’t understand? It is really very simple: time becomes furtive.
The fake Pontos Date Full Black gives rise to two trends: one is the modern, aesthetic styling that is plain but carefully crafted, as good in a woman’s wardrobe as a man’s dressing room, and the other is the lifestyle conveyed by a replcia watch without embellishment or outrageous colours to remind its wearer what time it is.
With 40mm in diameter case, and the steel that it is made of is coated in black, matt PVD. Two reinforcements along the sides, which surround the case, protect the notched crown, and the curve formed by this grouping echoes that of the watch’s short, fluted lugs. The screwdown back of the case is fitted with a sapphire crystal through which the oscillations of the ML115 calibre can be seen. This driver, designed by Maurice Lacroix, beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz) and provides 46 hours of power.
On the black dial, with its refined satin finish, the hour rim made up of facetted markers stands out because of its darker, gleaming colour, and is attached to the minute track placed in the centre. At the heart of this fake modern tableau emerge the black – of course! – dauphine-shape hands which display the hours and the minutes. Unobtrusive in daylight, they become blue in low light thanks to the special luminescent material with which they are coated. A varnished seconds hand completes this trio, and the date is shown at the 3 o’clock position, in a display with a sculpted frame.
